When I found you... Chapter 13(Jaevon Fanfic)

Overhead, crystal chandelier glittered and gleamed while the mirrored walls reflected a couple beneath them. They danced with easy grace, his arm possessively encircling the small waist the young woman in a stunning red gown.

Devon felt heavenly in his arms. She savored the sensation of a strong masculine arm around her waist. He was holding her much too close that she was afraid to look up and find herself lost in those smoldering eyes. Her whole body seemed to burn, her heart beat erratically and the wall she had erected around herself seemed to melt.

She couldn’t understand it.

What is this I’m feeling? I’ve never felt this way before… not even with Enrique, she thought uneasily. This wonderful unfamiliar, and yet dangerous feeling had been building up inside her throughout the whole week they’ve been together.

She wanted this sweet moment to last forever. And yet, she had the hazy feeling that something was wrong.

“You seem to be enjoying yourself.” James’ cold voice broke into Devon’s silent musings.

Startled, Devon looked up into the most chilling eyes she had ever seen.

“Y-yes… I am.” She stammered and tried to smile at him. But, James didn’t return the smile.

“Yes, of course. Who wouldn’t be...? With the two most eligible bachelor in this room dancing into your little palms like besotted little idiots.” James sneered.

“What? Who are you talking about?” Devon asked, bewilderment and confusion etched across her face.

“I’m talking about Ivan and Ryan… on how you played their feelings in order to get what you want. Why are you doing this? Do you really love money that much?” he heatedly accused.

“You’ve got it wrong,” she protested. “It’s not like that.”

“Oh sure,” he said sarcastically. “That’s what your kind says every time. You plead the innocent and you look so-so unspoilt that I was stupid enough to give you the benefit of the doubt, but not this time. This time there can be no doubt at all about what kind of woman you are!”

Without them realizing, they’d stopped dancing which gathered curious glances from the nearby couples.

“Oh... and what kind of woman is that?” Devon demanded.

“A scheming, ambitious slut,” he told her bluntly. “A girl whose out to milk all she can out of the situation. And you’ve really managed to bait gullible men who will fall for your petty wiles.”

Devon was dumbstruck. She was so confused and hurt by James’ unprovoked attack that she could scarcely think. What did she do to deserve this insult?

A while ago, she had hoped that this wonderful fairytale would last forever. But this fairytale turned out to be a nightmare. A nightmare she wanted to end.

Suddenly, a burning anger surged through her.

How dare he insult me with unfounded accusations?! She thought to herself.

Who the hell he thinks he is?

She yanked away from his embrace. She lifted up her chin and looked him right in the eye.

Righteous anger reflected in those depths which were met by James’ challenging and unflinching gaze.

Not wanting to waste her breath explaining to such a narrow-minded jerk, she started to turn away but her attempt was thwarted. James pulled her back to face him and said in a low menacing voice.

“Let me warn you, stay away from my friends. Don’t play with fire, ‘cause you might get yourself burned.”

Hurt and pride prompted her to taunt James. Let him think whatever he wants to think, Devon thought to herself and pulled her arm back from his grasp.

“Let me tell you something, Mr. Force,” Devon answered mockingly.

“What I want to do with whomever I want is none of your damn business, Devon continued derisively, with a hint of a smile touching her delectable lips.

James looked at her flushed, entrancing rebellious face and can’t help but admire the fiery beauty in front of him.

“I can play with fire, even with the devil himself, as long as I get what I want,” Devon finished, leaving a dumbfounded James in the middle of the dance floor.

With tears blurring her vision, Devon looked for her friends. She spotted Yen conversing with Ivan and headed to their direction. She tried to compose herself and wipe away the traces of her tears. As she was nearing them, she unfastened the necklace as well as the bracelet and called to Yen.

“Yen, I’ll be going first, my head hurts. I need to finish packing my things for my flight to Boracay this Monday.”

“Devon, are you okay?” Yen asked worriedly.

“I’m fine. It’s just a little headache,” she said to Yen. “Oh by the way Ivan, here’s the necklace. Thanks for letting me wear it for the night,” Devon said and handed it to Ivan together with the bracelet. “And please give this back to Ryan. Tell him I appreciate his gift a lot but I can’t accept it,” Devon said upon the questioning look Ivan directed at her.

“Okay, I will. Let me get you a cab.” Ivan offered.

“There’s no need. Just enjoy the rest of the night.” Devon said, and noticed the glowing faces of her friends that seemed to be getting along well.

This night had been terrible but at least for Yen and Ivan, love is blossoming between them. She said her goodbyes and hurriedly left the room before her anguished tears start to fall and betray her.

Meanwhile, on the far side of the room where the drinks are situated, James drowned the Whiskey as if it could wash away his self-disgust.

How could he be such a fool for believing that she’s different!

He should have known better that behind the captivating smile lurked a scheming, ambitious slut. But a part of him still wanted to hold and protect her. Protect her from what? James thought with frustration.

It should be me who needs protection from women of her kind. I have been fooled once and that’s enough. I should be congratulating myself for discovering her scheme immediately before it got out of hand.

James drank another glass hoping to drown out the wretched feeling eating him inside. But, instead of relief, it left a hollow feeling as if something was taken away from him… forever.
