When I found you... Chapter 28(Jaevon Fanfic)

Freshly showered, Devon went out from the bathroom and prepared for the day. Rummaging through her cabinet for clothes, she saw the teddy Enrique gave to her. She thought of the past weeks with Enrique and noticed that he’s acting like as if they’re together again. She realized that she can’t turn a blind eye anymore.

This has to stop.

I better clear and clarify things with him before it gets out of hand.

I just can’t let things go on like this, she thought determinedly.

She stuffed the teddy inside her bag, put on clothes and she went straight to work.

A man was driving a shiny, silver-gray Jaguar X-CF, weaving its way along the traffic. He was whistling along the songs of Jack Johnson, feeling lighthearted and eager to execute his plan.

James took a left turn around the corner and stopped in front of a small flower shop. He got out of the car, putting on his Ray Ban sunglasses, looking ruggedly handsome on his reverse-print pullover that hugged his wide shoulders. He looked up at the shop, checking if it’s the right one. He took out his phone and called his secretary.

“Marisa, it’s me. Are you sure this is the best flower shop in town?”

“Yes sir. They sell the freshest flowers you could find, especially the white roses you want. They have high quality service. I assure you, there will be no more delays in delivering.”

“Are you sure? Cause this shop doesn’t look like a high class one…” James asked, looking at the shop skeptically. Marisa sighed exasperatedly.

“Yes, I’m 101% sure. I’ve already checked it thoroughly and the reviews I’ve gathered are excellent. And FYI, do not judge the book by its cover…”

“Alright… alright. I’m sorry.” James said chuckling. “Thank you, Marisa. You’re the best.”

“Of course, I am!” Marisa said loftily.

James laughed at his facetious secretary and said his goodbyes.

Devon was taking a break from the exhausting work. Sitting on the couch, sipping her coffee, she looked out at the window so lost in thought. She was thinking on how to broach the subject to Enrique.

Finishing her coffee, she stood up and heard the door bell ring. She went to the door and saw a tiny man, holding a bouquet of flowers. The delivery man handed the bouquet of white roses and let her sign the delivery receipt. Devon said her thanks and went inside. She sat down on the couch and read the note attached to it.

Love,

You don’t know how you touched my life in so many ways I just can’t describe. You light up my day… you captured my heart. You taught me what love is supposed to be. When I look at you, I see something rare… a rose that can grow anywhere. In your eyes, I see all the love I’ll ever need. You’re all I need.

P.S.

This song is for you. If you want to hear the full song, wear your best tonight. I’ll pick you up.

Loving you forever,

James

Devon looked at the lovely roses and smiled. She smelled the fragrant flowers and her love for him bloomed even more.

I love you too, Jaime… forever.

The meeting of the board of directors ended earlier than what James expected so he decided to pick Devon up in her work place. He just can’t wait to see her. He went to his office and started gathering his things. He put on his jacket, taking his car keys and went out of the room. He talked to his secretary and made sure that everything was ready.

James arrived at Enrique’s house. He walked towards the patio when he noticed the door was ajar. He slowly opened the door, poked his head inside, and saw no one. He let himself in and was about to start calling Devon’s name when he heard voices on the other room. He came closer and heard a man’s voice.

“I love you, Devon. I want us to get back together.”

“Enrique… I-…”

What James saw made his heart crumble to dust. Right in front of his eyes, the woman he loved was in another man’s arms, kissed passionately by the man he loathes at the very moment.

He didn’t believe that Devon could do this to him but what he saw had put out that tiny ray of hope he desperately held on to.

The teddy bear clutched tightly in her hands, stopped him cold.

After all this time, it’s still the teddy bear… it’s still Enrique…

No… this can’t be happening again…

How could you, Devon…

No longer able to bear the pain, James hurriedly left the place… away from the woman who he thought was different... away from the sun that brought warmth into his life. His heart seemed to stop beating and along with it came the blissful numbness which he gladly succumbed to.

James looked up at the sky. Lightning and thunder clashed across the darkening sky.

His heart felt like it was being pierced a thousand times… taking the life out of him… cutting him into pieces. His heart died and along with it the future he dreamed of.

Devon being held tightly in Enrique’s arms, tried her might to break free. She pushed him hard away from her. When she was freed, she took a step back and swung her hand hard across his face.

“How dare you kiss me?! I don’t feel the same way, Enrique. I love James. Can’t you understand that?”

“Why? Why him?”

“You don’t need reasons to love someone. All I know is that I can’t live without him. I love him more than my life. Please understand.” Devon said looking at Enrique’s shattered expression. “I came here to talk to you and clarify things. And also, I want to return this teddy bear. I want to end everything between us. ”

Enrique just stood there looking at her. She left the teddy on the table and hurriedly left the room, out of the house.

James went straight to his office. He took out the ring from his pocket and threw it unceremoniously to the table. Taking out a bottle of whiskey from the cabinet, James poured himself a glass. He drank it in one gulp, wishing to drown away the pain.

He was sitting on the sofa of his office when his secretary came in.

“Sir, an envelope just arrived for you. Also, I came to tell you that everything is ready.”

“Cancel everything. Leave that here and then get out.”

The secretary was taken aback from the harsh words, but just obeyed the order and went out of the room.

As he stood up, the envelope along with its contents fell. James glimpsed a familiar smile. Slowly, he bent down to pick up one picture after another. What he saw flared him up, anger burst within him.

Devon smiling up at Enrique…

Enrique holding Devon’s face…

Devon whispering on Enrique’s ear…

Enrique touching Devon’s arm…

Devon laughing up at Enrique…

Enrique standing so close to Devon…

Then the image of Devon and Enrique locked in each other’s arms, kissing… suddenly sprang in his mind.

The images kept playing on his mind over and over and over and over again… tormenting him.

He closed his eyes as if it could blot out the excruciating torture but the images kept on haunting him… killing him. Pictures of Devon and Enrique’s betrayal made him want to strangle her… murder her with his own hands.

He wanted to die.

He poured himself another drink hoping to wash away the unbearable pain. His phone rang and saw that it was Devon calling. Clutching the pictures tightly, almost crumpling it, he answered the phone.

“Hey, Jaime. I’m done with work. I’m going home. What time are you gonna pick me up?”

“I’m in the office,” James answered in a cold, distant voice. “There have been a change of plans. Why don’t you come over?”

“Oh, alright.” Devon said, ignoring the coldness, almost aloof reply of James.

Devon was about to say something when James suddenly hung up. She was surprised and confused at his behavior. She put down the phone and went home to change. She then went straight to James’ office, bringing the bouquet of white roses.

Devon walked in the private reception area towards James’ office. She felt strangely wary of the silence that greeted her. Pausing in front of James’ office door, she fixed herself, feeling extremely delighted at seeing him again.

“Welcome back,” she said, walking into his suite.

James was standing at the window with his back to her, his hands on his pockets, staring out across the city. None of the lights had been turned on except for the lamp at James’ mahogany desk and the darkening sky gave the room a melancholic, cold feeling.

She walked towards him, feeling rather strange with his silence. She can’t fathom his mood since his back was to her. She put the flowers down on his desk and went to him. She stopped behind him and slid her arms around his waist. She felt how his body tensed at her touch. James took his hands out of his pockets and turned. Without glancing at her, he went over to the sofa and poured himself a drink.

“Come here.” He invited, his voice sounding unfamiliar.

Devon obediently went to him and sat down. She looked at his shadowed face, trying to decipher his mood. But before she could voice out her confusion over his strange expression, he suddenly curved his fingers around her nape and captured her lips in a rough, demanding kiss.

Devon’s confusion gave way to passion as James kissed her thoroughly. He dragged his mouth across her cheek towards her ear and whispered, “Do you love me?”

“I love you.” Devon replied breathlessly, closing her eyes and turned her mouth for his kiss.

James’ free hand shoved into the hair of Devon’s scalp and tightening his hold, he pulled it back roughly, wrenching her head away from him. Devon cried out with pain.

“Open your eyes, you little bitch! I want you to look at me and make sure that it’s me and not Enrique you’re kissing,” James spat out.

James brutally pushed her away from him causing her to fall down to the floor. Devon was sprawled helplessly on the floor. She looked up at James and her gaze froze, terrified at the black rage and virulent hatred blazing in his eyes.

“Jaime… Wha-…”

James threw the pictures on Devon’s face, turned around and walked towards his table.

Devon looked at the pictures and her eyes widened upon seeing the malicious pictures.

“Where did these pictures come from?”

“Where it came from is not important.” James said across the room, looking savagely at her.

Devon stood up, feeling weak-kneed, trying desperately to explain to James and hear her out.

“James, it’s not what you think… these pictures are not what they seem…please let me explain…” Devon explained deliriously, making James see reason.

“I don’t need your damn explanations!”

“Please… just listen to me…” Devon pleaded and slowly walked towards James, stretching her hand in a gesture of mute appeal.

“If I were you… I wouldn’t do that.” James warned in a menacingly soft voice.

“Do-do what?”

“Get any nearer to me.”

Devon stopped on her tracks. The threat of physical attribution registered on her mind. Refusing to believe it, she search his granite features for some signs of love for her.

“Please, just listen to me… I love you so much-…”

“Shut up!” he shouted, his voice cracked like a whiplash.

“No, you have to listen to me,” she said, speaking more quickly, driven by panic and a terrible sense of apprehension that nothing she could say or do could make him soften towards her. “I never stopped loving you. I’ve never shown love towards Enrique. I-…”

“I’m warning you, Devon,” he said in a murderous voice. “Shut up!”

“Jaime… please…” she begged wildly. “Don’t do this to us!”

“I don’t need your excuses. I know your kind.”

“You don’t believe that! Tell me you don’t believe those pictures,” she wept brokenly, hot tears streaming down her pale cheeks. “If you just let me explain… somehow I could prove it…if you’ll just give me a chance-…”

“No.”

“I love you so much,” she wept hysterically. “Why won’t you listen to me? I’m begging you to just listen to me!” she cried wildly, falling down on the floor, begging him.

“Get up and fix yourself.” James ordered in a menacing voice.

Devon looked up and saw the dead finality of James’ decision to cast her out of his life… forever.

She looked at him, begging him for the last time to hear her out. But all she saw was rage and contempt in his eyes.

“Please… Jaime… I love you-…”

“Shut up! Nothing you can say or do will make me believed you,” James warned icily. “Get up and get out of here.”

“No! James, don’t do this to us!”

“I’m warning you. Get out of here or else I will call the security.”

Devon stiffened, not believing that the man who love her so much could do this to her without letting her explain. Her eyes filled with tears of love and panic as she tried to beg him for the very last time. She stood up, bracing a hand on the floor and slowly pushed herself up on her feet.

“Jaime…”

James pushed the button on the intercom and called for security.

Devon wanted to die. How she wished everything was just a dream…

This can’t be happening…

God, tell me this is all just a dream…

I love him so much… how could he do this to me?

Is he still the man I love?

Listen to me Jaime… please… she thought desperately, begging God to let him listen… for the last time. She looked at him imploringly. But James returned her gaze with a blast of contempt.

The door of the office opened and two men came in.

“Get her out of here” James ordered coldly.

Devon stared in paralyzed terror as she watched the two guards coming towards her. They surrounded her and one man took her by the elbow. She yanked her arm free and took a last glance at James, showing him all the hurt and pain she felt. She turned around and walked out of his office… out of his life.

James watched her retreating back. As the door closed behind her, he went over the sofa to get himself another drink. He found the pictures scattered on the floor and felt a searing pain on his chest then the realization hit him… he will never see those eyes, those smiles again.

He closed his eyes and prayed for God to take away the pain… to take him away.

He went back to his desk and saw the white roses lying on his desk. Anger boiled up inside him. He took the flowers and smashed it with all the anger and pain he felt. White petals scattered on the floor, all ruined…. like his heart… all broken. He threw the bottle of wine, the red liquid staining the white petals echoing the torment and pain his heart is suffering, bleeding for a love he lost. He wished that his heart could be mended just like any wound. But he’s not sure that he could be healed anymore…

He pushed all the things on his table, sending them sprawled on the floor, throwing everything that he could touch. He sat down on the floor, surrendering to the tears of anguish he could not control anymore.

It was dark and raining outside, lightning and thunder striking above the cold, darkened horizon. Devon walked out of the office, not minding the icy sting of the rain pelting on her skin. She has taken three steps when one of the securities grabbed her by the elbow.

“Do you have a coat or perhaps a car, miss?”

“No, I don’t. I didn’t bring my car.” Devon answered, getting her arm out of his hold. She turned and walked away from the building. She hardly heard the guard calling her. She hardly noticed what’s going on around her. She gladly welcomed the blessed numbness seeping through her veins. The coldness of the rain was like a sweet torture to her shattered heart.

She walked on not minding where she was heading. She doesn’t care where she would end up. The thought of losing her life doesn’t matter anymore. Hair plastered on her head, all wet and cold, Devon welcomed the dull ache of her heart.

She walked on and on and on… until the dark oblivion engulfed her.

A lifeless figure was lying helplessly on the street, rain and lightning echoing the despair in her heart.

Love is like a rose.

Its beauty is incomparable, but once pricked by its thorns, the pain can be unbearable.

Yet you welcomed the bittersweet agony, for love is the most beautiful thing one could have.

Cause it’s the closest thing to heaven…

But will the two broken souls find each other through their once strong love or will they end up broken… forever?
