When I found you... Chapter 29(Jaevon Fanfic)

Yen’s phone kept on ringing for hours. She tried her best to ignore it. She knew that it is Ivan who has been calling her nonstop. She doesn’t want to talk anymore since she already ended the relationship. She already explained everything to him that their relationship will never work, because they are living in two different worlds. Ivan has been begging her to reconsider and that it doesn’t matter to him. But it does matter to her. She didn’t fit in his glamorous lifestyle. She has been crying for days and tried to get over him.

Her phone rang again and she looked at the caller. It was Ivan. So, she decided to turn off her phone and ignore the pain pricking incessantly in her heart. She went to her room to sleep the pain away.

After awhile, she fell asleep and dreamt of Ivan having an accident in the middle of a storm. She suddenly woke up with a start and heard the doorbell ringing continuously. She wondered who it could be at this kind of weather. She quickly went out of bed and headed for the door.

“Wait! Who is it?” Yen called out putting on her robe and tried to fix herself.

“It’s me. Open up!” Ivan answered banging hard on the door.

Yen was surprised that she stopped and hesitated to open the door.

“Why are you here? What do you want?”

“Please, open up! We need to talk.”

“There’s nothing to talk about!”

“Please, I’m freezing out here… let me in.”

Yen was left with no other choice but to let him in. She opened the door and saw Ivan all wet and shivering from the cold. She let him in and went to get some towels.

“Here, dry yourself.” Yen said and handed the towel to him.

Instead of taking the towel, Ivan grabbed her by the shoulders and hugged her tightly.

“Let go o-…” Yen’s protest was cut short by the onslaught of Ivan’s mouth. Yen tried to push him away but protest gave way to passion. Ivan’s kiss broke her resistance. How she longed for his mouth on hers. She missed him so much and now that she’s in his arms again she just can’t ignore the truth that she still loves him.

Sunlight streaming through the draperies, lighting up the dim room were two people are lying in each other’s arm covered by the blanket. The man stirred and slowly opened his eyes. He looked at the unfamiliar room and felt a voluptuous figure in his arms. He looked down and saw the woman he has always dreamt of being in his arms like this. He smiled and remembered the night of passion they’ve shared. He kissed the top of her head and pulled her closer to him. The woman in his arms moved and opened her eyes.

“Good morning.” Ivan greeted.

Yen smiled and snuggled closely to his neck.

“You have to make a right man out of me. You have no choice but to marry me.”

“Okay.” Yen answered flippantly. It was Ivan’s turn to be surprised.

“That’s it? After all those months I’ve begged you to marry me?” Ivan asked, laughing. “So, this is the only way to get you to say yes?”

Yen laughed and leaned her forearms atop Ivan’s chest.

“I just realized that I can’t live without you. I’ve decided to compromise.” Yen said grinning.

“If I had known, I would have got you on my bed the day I asked you to marry me.” Ivan said chuckling, kissing Yen on the temple. Yen laughed and playfully hit him on the shoulder.

The phone suddenly rang. Yen picked up the receiver and was surprised to hear from Devon’s sister.

“Yen, please help me… don’t know what to do. Devon got into an accident last night. Grandma is sick and I don’t know who else to call…” Chloe sobbed on the phone.

“What? Calm down. Where are you?”

“I’m in the St. Luke’s Hospital. Please hurry…”

“I’ll be there. Don’t worry.”

St. Luke’s Hospital…

A doctor and a nurse came in to assess Devon’s condition. Chloe immediately stood up and watched them hovering over her sister.

“How’s my sister, Doctor Van? Is she okay?”

“She only suffered minor cuts and bruises. She obtained minor fracture on her left leg though, so we’ll still have her undergo some tests to make sure there won’t be any complications. Anytime today she’ll wake up.” Doctor Van said smiling.

“Thank you, doc.” Chloe said, relief showing in her face.

The doctor excused herself to check her other patients. Chloe pulled a chair and sat down at the side of Devon’s bed. Yen came bursting in with Ivan at her heels.

“Chloe, what happened to her?” Yen asked while hugging Devon’s sister.

“A car hit her while she was walking alone. The driver brought her here in the hospital. He said she just came out of nowhere. Good thing he was able to maneuver the car away from her before he could hit her head on. I’ve been calling James, but he won’t pick up. I knew they were together before the accident.”

“My gawd,” Yen sobbed and went over to Devon’s bed, holding her hand.

“I better call James.” Ivan said and dialed James’ number.

“James, where are you? Something happened to Devon. She was hit by a car. We’re in St. Luke’s Hospital. You better hurry and come here.” Ivan said.

“I don’t care.” James answered after a long pause and hung up the phone.

Ivan was surprised and just stared at his phone.

“What did he say?” Yen asked, looking at Ivan’s expression.

“He hung up on me.” Ivan said bewildered.

Fretzie and Brett came in, looking all worried.

“What happened to her? How is she?” Fretzie asked frantically.

“Calm down, Fretzie. It’s not good for the baby.” Brett warned.

“How can I calm down? She’s my friend!”

“Please, calm down Fretzie. She’s alright. She just suffered minor injuries.” Yen said.

“Where’s James?” Brett asked.

“We’re all wondering about the same thing. I tried to call him earlier but he hung up on me.” Ivan said, looking at Devon’s lifeless form lying in bed.

Marisa came five minutes late and was praying that Mr. Force has not yet arrived.

As she was walking through the reception area, she breathed a sigh of relief upon finding the office so silent. She walked over to her desk and put down her bag. She was humming while arranging her things, feeling rather happy that her boss did not arrive yet, when the door suddenly burst open and a haggard handsome-looking Mr. Force came out.

“Make me some coffee. Oh, and clear my office.” James ordered coldly and went to the bathroom without waiting for an answer.

“Y-yes, sir.” Marisa stammered, looking at his retreating back.

Marisa came in and saw the office all cluttered like a tornado whirled in.

How the hell am I going to clean this?! Marisa thought.

James splashed his face with water, ignoring the guilt he felt. Ivan’s news hit him out of nowhere. He was surprised and didn’t expect to hear such news.

How could that happen to her?

Her condition couldn’t be that serious… what if….

Why do I still care?

She’s nothing to me. James thought angrily and went back to his office.

James saw Marisa almost done with cleaning the office. She looked up and scurried away, making last minute arrangements on James’ table. She picked up the purse she saw earlier and was about to hand it to her boss but she hesitated upon deducing his mood.

“If you’re done, get out.”

“Uhm… sir…”

“What?” James snapped.

“Uhm… I believe this purse belongs to Ms. Dev-…”

“Shut up!” James thundered and slamming his hands on his desk. “Don’t ever mention that name or I’ll fire you.”

Marisa was shocked. With teary eyes, she immediately left the office, leaving the purse on the coffee table.

James sat down and run his hand on his hair, feeling rather tired. He started reading the reports filed up on his desk. Trying hard to concentrate on what he’s reading, the news and the memories of Devon seemed to haunt him. He put the papers aside and wearily leaned his head at the back of his chair and closed his eyes. He tried to clear his mind off the memories. He opened his eyes and stood up. He went over to the cabinet and got himself a drink. As he turned around, he saw the purse lying on the coffee table. He went over to it and looked inside. He saw IDs, powder and lip gloss, and some money.

This belongs to Devon.

How did she get home? All her money is in here.

Didn’t she bring her car?

I better return this…

It’s not because I want to see her. I’ll just return her things…

James took his jacket and went out of the office with that resolve but he knew deep inside it’s not the only reason he’s going to the hospital. He badly wants to see her.

A dark cloudy day covered the sky giving the white room a grayish streak. It has been almost three hours since Devon woke up. Seated in her bed, she looked pale and the shine that used to be seen in her eyes is now bleak… lifeless.

Fretzie is now on the verge of tears seeing her friend’s condition. Yen sat dejectedly on the seat in the corner of the room, looking helplessly at Devon.

Since Devon woke up, she hasn’t uttered a single word. She just looked at them like they’re not there. They’ve tried to speak to her for the last three hours. But everytime they would do that she would just gaze at them, her face empty and hollow.

The men went out of the room, leaving the three women in the room. Chloe went home to take care of her grandmother who is sick.

Fretzie looked at Yen with pain in her eyes, tears now falling in her eyes.

“What are we going to do, Yen?”

“I don’t know. The doctor said she’s well physically. She said she’s suffering from mild depression. She asked me if something traumatic happened to her before the accident… my gawd… what kind of friend am I… I don’t even know what happened to her these past weeks,” Yen said, tears flowing down her cheeks. “Chloe said she was with James the night before the accident… Where the hell is he?”

“Brett can’t contact him.”

“Ivan and Ryan can’t contact him too. He’s not answering.”

Three hours. Three hours of nonexistence. Devon sat there, feeling the emptiness seeping through her, numbing her senses, giving her heart a heavy feeling, a dull ache. She looked at her friends… her two most loved friends.

Why are they crying? Why are they so worried?

I’m okay. I’m just a little tired. I’m alright, nothing’s wrong with me…

Why are they so worried that I’m not speaking? I’m just exhausted.

I don’t want to speak… Devon thought, feeling the heaviness in her heart wearing her down. She closed her eyes and leaned her head down on the pillows.

Yen and Fretzie saw the movement and deduced that Devon is tired so they went out of the room, leaving Devon to rest.

People come and go out of the hospital. Many patients are brought to the ICU. Nurses and doctors are busy attending to patients. James entered the hospital, went to the reception area and asked for the room of Devon Gutierrez. He then went up to the elevator, holding Devon’s purse.

Upon arriving on the floor where Devon’s room was located, James stopped in front of the door. He took off his sunglasses, composing himself and opened the door.

What he saw made his heart constrict with pain and guilt. He saw a sallow and spiritless Devon sitting on the bed with eyes closed.

He stopped dead in the door when she opened her eyes. James was about to say something when Devon’s eyes registered hatred and pain. He slowly closed the door and started walking towards her. James looked at the emotions playing on her face, trying to fathom them.

The dull ache Devon felt was replaced with wrath upon seeing the man she despised the most in her life. The icy numbness she built around her heart was melted by the burning hatred and sorrow she felt. The memories of last night came rushing through her mind and the anger bloomed into deadly venom that scorched through her veins… through her heart.

“Get out.” Devon whispered. James stopped and looked questioningly at her.

“Get out.” She said in a more clear voice. James registered the anger rapidly building up inside her. He tried to talk to her but Devon’s wrath was beyond her control.

“Get out! Damn you!” Devon raged, looking menacingly at James.

James was taken aback and seemed rooted on the floor.

“You bastard! Get out!” Devon shouted angrily, grabbing the vase at her bedside and threw it to James. It missed him by the ear. He saw Devon grabbing anything she could reach and threw it at him. The IV was dislodged from the back of Devon’s hand from thrashing things at him. She was raving like a lunatic, throwing anything at James, cursing him in an endless tirade.

James saw Devon’s hand where the IV site was is now bleeding.

“Devon, stop it! You’re hurting yourself.” James said worriedly but he can’t seem to get any closer because Devon won’t stop firing him with things.

“How dare you come here! You monster!” Devon shouted furiously, hot angry tears flowing in her eyes. “After all the things you’ve let me through, I don’t want to see your face ever again! I want you out of my life... forever.” Devon said, looking at him with hatred in her face. “I cursed the day that I met you.” She finished with dead finality.

James felt shattered by the last words. His heart seemed it was being ripped out of his chest. He was not expecting this tirade… he was not expecting her to say those words.

He doesn’t want to hear those words… not from her.

Yen and Fretzie came with the men on their heels. They heard a commotion in Devon’s room and heard her shouts that they immediately went to her room. They saw James standing in the middle of the room and Devon heaving with shallow breaths. The room was a mess, broken vases and glasses, food and fruits, flowers and pillows were scattered on the floor.

“What happened here?” Yen asked bewildered and saw the blood flowing from Devon’s hand. “Devon, you’re bleeding!” Yen exclaimed in horror and immediately went to her friend’s side. She took Devon’s hand but Devon whisked her hand away.

“Get him out of here.” Devon said with a deadly calm in her voice.

All of them looked at James and then at Devon. When no one seemed to heed her she burst into another tirade.

“Didn’t you hear me?! I said get him out of here!” Devon shrieked, her body quivering with anger. “If you won’t get him out of here, I will kill him! I swear I’ll kill him!”

Ivan went over to James and walked him out of the room. But Ryan butt in, grabbing James’ collar and dragged him out to the hallway. Ryan pushed him hard on the wall and suddenly punched him on the face. James thought he would punch him again but Ryan’s hand hit the wall.

“What have you done to her?” Ryan asked anger visible in his eyes. James did not answer but just looked at him. “Damn you, James! What did you do to her for her to react like that?” Ryan insisted, blocking an arm across James’ chest.

“Ryan, please calm down. Let him go.” Brett intervened.

“Shut up! He needs to explain!” Ryan shouted and tightened his hold on James.

“I didn’t do anything to her. She’s the one who cheated on me.” James said, looking at Ryan aloofly. Ryan looked at him like he has taken leave of his senses.

“Cheated on you? Surely, you don’t believe that.” Ryan scoffed, not believing every word James said.

“I saw her with my own two eyes. She kissed another man.” James said, fires lurking in the depths of his eyes. “I don’t care if you believe me or not. I know what I saw.”

Ryan gazed at his face incredulously. He wanted very much to punch him to death.

“I don’t believe you. I know Devon and she wouldn’t do anything of that sort.”

“I don’t care what you think about her.” James said and pushed Ryan hard. Ryan staggered and looked at him with burning anger in his eyes.

“You’re a bastard.” Ryan said. “Did you know what you did to her? Did you remember the promise we had? You promised you won’t make her cry… that you will make her happy. You’ve just broken that promise… and so is our friendship. I don’t want to see you near her… ever again. From now on, I will take care of her… even if it’s the last thing I will do.” Ryan vowed and with a last look at James, he went back inside.

James watched Ryan’s retreating back. The last words Ryan uttered made him feel like his heart was being tied with a stem of thorns.

Why should I care? James thought and left the premises without a backward glance at his friends. He walked towards the elevator and on the other side he saw Enrique.

Devon was lying on her bed sleeping, looking pale and weak. The doctor checked her earlier and gave her some medicine to calm her down. Fretzie and Yen can’t help but cry to see their friend suffering. The glow in her face was replaced by an unbearable pain, the spirit that always shines in her eyes are now bleak and empty. Even in her sleep, the tears kept flowing. Not even in her sleep can she avoid the agony that is continuously throbbing in her chest. Silent, tormenting tears are crushing at her heart, bleeding for a love that she lost. It’s been days that Devon would cry in her sleep. She went back to not talking to anyone and don’t have the will to do anything. She does what her friends tell her to but without any interest. She would just stare blankly at them, like a human being empty of a soul.

The doctor said that she’s physically well and that she can go home anytime. But Doctor Van suggested that Devon should be brought to a psychologist for she’s suffering from a mild depression and it would get worse if she would not be treated. The doctor advised that she should not be left alone and to take her to stress-free places. Fretzie and Yen heeded the advice and started planning on what to do. Ryan volunteered to be with her 24/7 if needed and offered free access to his golf clubs and beach resorts.

Two weeks… it has been two weeks since she had shut herself from the world. Sitting in the front seat of the car, Devon looked at the lush, green trees, Devon thought of the things that happened to her life… the broken dreams, the dashed hopes, the pain, and the anguish of the love she lost. She looked at her friends peacefully sleeping at the back of the car, remembered the times she would see Yen and Fretzie silently crying at her side. She looked back to the windows and gaze back to the glinting light of the sun.

This has to stop.

I need to stop doing this.

Snap out of it, Devon.

You have to move on… enough dwelling on your miseries.

You can’t let your friends suffer by doing this.

I’ll forget about you.

I’ll smile and laugh again… but not for you… not anymore, Jaime.

I’ll get my life back. I’ll be happy again.

Goodbye Jaime… my love. She thought achingly, closing her eyes to stop the tears from flowing.

Sitting in one of the seats, James looked at the clear blue sky. He watched as the plane landed on the ground. In an hour or so, he’ll be flying to Australia soon. He turned as he saw the man he has been waiting for. He stood up and faced the man in front of him.

“Thanks for coming here, man.” James greeted Ivan.

“Are you sure of your decision?”

“Yes. I think it’s best for everyone if I leave here for good.”

Ivan sighed and looked at his friend.

“James, running away from your problems won’t make things right. Devon can’t do the thing you accused her of. I know you still love each other. If you just talk it out… maybe-…”

“There’s nothing to talk about. My decision is final. I believe what I saw.”

“You believed it without hearing Devon’s explanations?”

“Yes. Seeing what happened is enough for me.”

“James…”

“That’s enough, Ivan. Nothing you can say will make me change my mind.”

A stout man approached them. He is James’ pilot, informing him that the plane is ready.

James looked at his friend and extended his hand. Ivan took it and tightly clasped it.

“Take care, James. I just hope you don’t regret anything.”

“Goodbye, Ivan.”

James went to the departure area, leaving all the happy and the tormenting memories behind.
